KMB's Luminous Crystal Bus-stop Pole
Before Christmas this year, KMB will introduce a new batch of pioneering luminous crystal bus-stop poles in Hong Kong. The newly designed bus-stop pole is a fusion of modern and traditional, adding a twinkle to Hong Kong’s night scene.
Mr. Thomas Tong, Head of KMB’s Facilities Management Department, said, “Our new luminous crystal bus-stop poles perfectly integrate aesthetic appearance and user-friendly functionality. With the design concepts of simplicity and resplendence, they look like shining pearls decorating the streets of Hong Kong. The illuminated route information panels allow passengers to check route information conveniently at night.”
KMB’s luminous crystal bus-stop pole, 2.83 metres in height (5 centimetres taller than traditional bus-stop pole), features a rectangular crystal bus-stop sign at the top. The crystal bus-stop sign keeps the traditional red circular pattern which is well known to the public. The bottom part of the sign shows the bus stop name clearly in larger characters than the traditional bus-stop pole.
The new bus-stop pole is equipped with a multi-sided route information panel, which rotates 360 degrees, allowing passengers to obtain route information conveniently. The illuminated route information panel enables passengers to check route information easily at night. In addition, the layout of each route information sheet has been redesigned for passengers’ easy reference. On the left of the sheet, bilingual bus stop names are given for all stops in the direction the bus is travelling. On the right, information on sectional and full fares is given for the corresponding bus stops. Three colours, red, green and grey, are used to convey the route information vividly and clearly.
The luminous crystal bus-stop pole is lit by LED lighting, which has treble the lifespan and eight times the electricity-saving capacity of fluorescent tubes. Since LED lighting contains no mercury, it is pollution-free and can easily be recycled. As LED lighting is powered by a silicon rechargeable battery, the need for road works for the installation of an electricity supply is avoided. To further save energy, the new bus-stop pole is equipped with a timer to regulate the power supply for the LED lighting, which will be automatically switched on from 7:00 to 12:00 a.m. in summer and from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. in winter. Instead of pig iron, the frame of the new bus-stop pole is made of stainless steel, which is lighter and more convenient for cleaning and maintenance.
Luminous crystal bus-stop poles will be installed at 20 bus stops in Yau Tsim Mong, Sha Tin and Kwun Tong Districts in Kowloon and some Island districts as part of a three-month trial period. If the result of the trial is satisfactory, KMB will consider the next stage in the installation plan.
KMB operates around 400 bus routes and manages more than 4,000 bus stops. There are currently 2,800 bus-stop poles on the streets.
