KMB Introduces the First Euro V Two-Axle E-friendly Bus to Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s first Euro V two-axle E-friendly bus, combining the latest technology with enhanced environment-friendly features and saloon layout, joined the KMB bus fleet today (17 February 2010), running on Route 606 between Choi Wan and Siu Sai Wan. This represents a major milestone in Hong Kong’s bus development.

Apart from the installation of the most advanced Euro V engine, the KMB Euro V two-axle E-friendly bus is also the first double-deck air-conditioned bus in Hong Kong with a two-axle design. As the fuel consumption of a two-axle bus is less than that of a three-axle bus of a similar nature, the emission levels of a two-axle bus will be comparatively lower, thus contributing to a cleaner environment.

The new bus is also the first to be equipped with a ZF EcoLife gearbox. Whether operating in urban areas, rural areas or on highways, the E-friendly intelligent gearbox’s advanced programme will automatically adjust to the best shift under different road environments and changes in loading. Fuel consumption can be optimised without reducing the power and the torque of the bus. Compared to the gearbox used currently on most buses, the E-friendly intelligent gearbox transfers 25% more torque and is designed for an extended service lifetime of approximately 40%. In addition, LED lighting, which has a longer life span than the common fluorescent tubes, will also be introduced on the new bus. Besides electricity savings, LED tubes contain no mercury and are beneficial to the environment by reducing waste and pollution.

The new bus is 10.5 metres long with a mix of careful curves contributing to a stylish appearance. The super-low floor two-axle design offers a spacious and comfortable interior. There are no steps all the way from the entrance to the final row of seats, with a gently sloping floor and a wide gangway for passenger convenience. The bus is equipped with a full range of facilities including an enhanced air-conditioning system, 2+2 high-back seats with a pink rose pattern, a straight staircase, a wheelchair parking space and the bus stop announcement system, assuring passengers of pleasant and comfortable journeys.
